It is Buddha Purnima today.. On this very auspicious day, let us first understand who is a Buddha ?
For a lot of people out there, Siddharth Gautama is the Buddha. This is a very wrong belief. Rather, any person who has achieved Nirvana, who has completely gotten rid of his raaga (craving), aversion (dvesha) and attachments (moh), made his/her mind absolutely free from all mental defilements - anger, hatred, ill-will, animosity, etc.., he is a Buddha, she is a Buddha....
We are not remembering Siddharth Gautama, he has no monopoly over being a Buddha, we are remebering all those who have been Buddhas and there have been plenty.
So, today, let us not only remember them, but also try to imbibe their good qualities - infinite compassion and love for all beings. Let us try to meditate and practice Vipassana, the path that Buddha taught for liberation.
No Buddha can walk the path for us, he can only guide us. We have to walk the path ourselves. And we all can become a Buddha.
