Are you guilty of neglecting your mental health? It’s surprisingly easy to overlook your own needs and get swamped by the pressures of life. But if you make it a habit to neglect yourself, you’re allowing yourself to become emotionally and mentally unhealthy. Use self-care to keep yourself well, and learn how to develop the right habits for better mental health.

Surveys show that many Americans feel stress on a daily basis. The burdens you face and the worries you experience can create a lot of stress. Practice some basic self-care steps to reduce that stress and start to feel better. Don't forget to set boundaries for yourself and to say "no" when you need to. Sleep has a huge impact on your overall mental health, so make sure you're getting enough high-quality sleep. Eat healthy foods to avoid vitamin deficiencies that can sap your energy and affect your mood. And try to get regular exercise to relieve stress, increase your energy, and feel good about yourself. It will be easier to stay on the path to recovery if you focus on your emotional and mental well-being.

 

Start Some Healthy Habits

 

Stay focused on self-care by developing healthy habits. In addition to getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising, pay attention to your personal hygiene. When you're suffering from depression or experiencing poor mental health, simple self-grooming starts to feel like too much of a chore. But it's important to continue to take care of yourself. Taking a bath or a hot shower can relieve stress, which helps you achieve a healthier emotional state.

 

Try a new hobby, like meditation or yoga, that can relieve stress. Try out a few breathing exercises and feel the tension begin to leave your body. A little daily meditation can go a long way toward improving your mental health by reducing negative thoughts and emotions. Just focus on breathing slowly, in and out, and you will feel stress start to fall away. Yoga is another good way to get into a more positive headspace and relieve tension. Stretching and yoga exercises strengthen muscles and help you focus your mind.

 

Self-Care When You're Part of a Couple

 

When you're in a relationship, self-care can feel like a selfish choice, but it's not. It's actually healthier for you to practice self-care when you're part of a couple. Take time for yourself, away from your partner, so that you feel happy, relaxed, and fulfilled. You'll have less to give your partner if you're stressed out, exhausted, and neglecting yourself. You should set boundaries in your intimate relationships, too, according to Love and Life Toolbox. It's okay to say "no" to your partner and let them know when they're asking for too much or when you're becoming too overwhelmed. Always be honest about your feelings, even the not-so-positive feelings.
